Rita's story

"2020 will be the third year that my family and I have taken part in the '65km for Cystic Fibrosis' (CF) event. Our daughter Aleesha Rose was diagnosed with CF at birth and 10 years on she is kicking goals. CF knocks her down every now and then but she gets right back up and shows it who’s in charge.

This year my motivation goes beyond Aleesha living with CF. This year I want to help grow awareness and educate people about CF. Ninety per cent of the time Aleesha’s illness is invisible to others. It doesn’t always show itself in a way that makes her 'look' sick but on the inside it’s quietly doing its thing. Occasionally it rears its ugly head and manages to knock her down for a while. I want people to know about this
often silent illness, because knowledge is power and we need all the powerful people we can get to one day say “we did it – we found a cure”.

This year we have 72 walkers as part of Team Aleesha Rose. The support from our family and friends has absolutely blown us away. Whilst I want to raise as much money as I can to get us closer to finding a cure and getting life changing medical treatment at our fingertips here in Australia, I also
want people to get an insight as to what it’s like to live with CF. I want them to know what’s it’s like to be a child living with CF and how quickly they have to grow up and learn to protect themselves from little bugs that would otherwise be merely a sniffle for someone else. I want people to appreciate how CF changes their daily lives; it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, it’s commitment to daily physio, requires mental strength and can sometimes be isolating. I want people to know that the simple act of breathing freely each day is a precious gift to someone with CF."

Thanks so much Rita for sharing your thoughts with us. What a fabulous turnout by Team Aleesha Rose for the event. They are also doing a fabulous job with leading the fundraising efforts with just under $5000 raised to date.

If you would like to join in the event on Saturday 14th March, we'd love to see you there, helping us to raise much needed funds for research but also assisting us to raise awareness like Rita and Team Aleesha Rose are doing.
